I just was entering in as contacts my poi and entered in 239 Summit Park Drive, Pittsburgh the Spring Hill Suite in Pittsburg for my May long weekend and noticed the HP displayed the wrong location.
The tele Atlas maps are way off its before Quinn Drive and not closer to Park Lane Drive. I just sent a correction to Tele Atlas.
On tele Atlas map web site its off. Damm
Uncle Ben have you encountered this. I have been added my own poi like restaurants, shopping malls, and hotel as contacts and then press Gps navigate contacts under the contact icon. Even though I entered in the address correctly and has the check mark in green it wont route me to that location.
The ipaq pauses about 10 sec and say not a valid address. When the address are not valid I would get a X or ? mark but all my poi/contacts are with the green check mark. What gives. :)

Navigon 310 Maps Directions

  • The problem you highlight about contacts is a known issue, even more so when you try to synchronize with your desktop MS Outlook. You can make them navigatable if you tweak the address a bit:
    1) Spell out the state, don't use abbreviations
    2) Key in 'United States' for the country
    3) Spell out the street name, don't use abbreviations. eg. use' Saint Vincent', not 'St Vincent'
    4) Do not use a period at the end of road type abbreviations:
    eg. 'Dr' not 'Dr.'
    5) Do not put suite numbers in front of the road name.
eg. '123 Elm St' not '11-123 Elm St'
As I indicated earlier, this is known issue, HP is well-aware of it, one that I hope will be addressed in the upcoming firmware update.
As for the map error you've uncovered, no map is perfect ... T.A. has errors, so does NAVTEQ. I suspect that the street numbers were reversed. I've come across a number of those in Canada and south of the border. But I had similar issues on a Garmin 260, in one case I was dealing with the exact same location. I don't think we should be too surprised with this. Just look at the phenomenal amount of data that goes into those maps and, keeping in mind that human intervention is still needed to perform for the data entry function, not for all, but presumably fopr a good chunk of it, then it should be no surprise that errors will show up here and there.
Hope this helps. Have a good and safe trip!
  • Uncle Ben thanks for the tips I did follow previously on how to enter in the contacts in the ipaq.
After I sync all my contacts with outlook and realize they don't work I deleted all the contacts manually from the Hp all 60+ contacts. :(
I added back the poi address under contacts them and use the format you suggested. I find to get the HP to accept with the addresses with the green check marks I had to enter in the address some with Drive and some with Dr all depends.
All the contacts that I have has a Green check mark saying that its good. No X or ?
I go to Michigan 3 to 4 times a year.
The hotel I stay is Drury Inn 575 West Big Beaver Road, Troy 48084.
To get the Hp to accept it with the green check mark I had to enter in 575 W Big Beaver Road etc. Would not accept West.
Down the road is Somerset Collection Mall address 2800 West Big Beaver Road, Troy.
For the Hp to accept I had to enter 2800 W. Big Beaver, Troy etc with zip. I had to drop the Road off the address weird. I dont mind playing with the address to get the green check that its correct but when I select go to it says address is incorrect even though I get the Green check mark saying that it is correct.
Ps: I know its not the map fault when the error lies with the map provider, I'm ok with this. This is why when I travel with friends we all have gps in each cars.
I recommended the Magellan 4250 to two friends. Now when I go I will lend a friend my Magellan to use, soon will be replaced with the Navigon 7100. I mailed ordered it from Costco $299.
As back up I still have my MS Street and Strips 2008 with gps sensor on my laptop.
  • MTurbo, yes, entering contacts is tricky, whether you do them manually or after synching with Outlook. But if you have a green checkmark on a contact and you still can't navigate to it, the only explanation I can think of is that the address is NOT on the map. What happens if you use the Go To command, without using the contact, but using the state, city, street and number ... is that address on the map?
  • Uncle Ben, by the way thanks for the suggestions.
I must be in the Twilight Zone, I stand corrected I just tired again the poi that I entered in as contacts and it now pulls up the map and ask if I want to set as destination. :)
Takes a good 5 to 10 seconds to respond after I select.
Question can I add the icon for restaurant, shopping etc to contacts or can only use images from the sd cards.
  • I just PM'd you ... looks like we're both sharing the same zone Mark.  You were right about the map inaccuracy - the Woodbine ramp only runs Northbound on the T.A. maps!
  • This ipaq sure keeping us busy I don't mind the little quirks just hope in the next update it only gets better. :)
I have been busy adding the contacts/poi in the ipaq manually. Now how do I backup this format so that I dont lose the info I have been entering manually since the content manager can't sync properly yet. :(
Ps: The werid thing is before the update the ipaq told me to turn left(south) on Woodbine Ave, had no issues driving to work from the highway.
  • http://www.ottawa.ca/residents/building_code/naming_streets/duplicate/index_en.html < all of the streets changed here were done in 2002, but on my 310 I have to search the old names...
The maps that came with my newly purchase HP iPAQ 310 are 6 years old, or older... I can't believe it... I have been trying to find updated maps from TeleAtlas, but they don't even have North America as an option from their online store??
Not only that, I purchased it online direct from HP, and apparenlty I can't return it without them keeping 15%... but that's okay, because, if I understand their return policy correctly, I can't return it because I opened the software disc... I'll be calling them Monday about it...
I have to admit, I work for HP. I have tons and tons of HP products in my house and all of them work fantastic. The HP iPAQ 310 is a fantastic piece of hardware, my only disappointment here is the fact that TeleAtlas provided crap.
Can I install or use any other map formats?
  • The maps are not 6 years old in terms of the date they were produced. The maps that come on the 310 were sourced in 2007. However that doesn't mean that every single road was 100% up-to-date at the time they were sourced.
I can show you streets that have existed for over 20 years that are not on the map, and streets that are shown on the map but have never existed. It happens from time to time with any map set.
Tele Atlas doesn't sell maps directly to consumers in North America-- rather you purchase maps from the company that built the GPS. In the case of the iPAQ, the 2007 based maps that are installed are the most recent HP has made available.
Each manufacturer has their own proprietary map format they use. Some areas are pretty much 100% accurate while other areas will contain quite a few errors.
You can report those updates to Tele Atlas at mapinsight.teleatlas.com

You can back everything to your desktop via Content Manager, under Tools.
  • To Tim,
So, what you're saying is that there is that it doesn't matter which GPS I may go with or stick with I'm may always have map inaccuracies?
    Cheers,
  • So, what you're saying is that there is that it doesn't matter which GPS I may go with or stick with I'm may always have map inaccuracies?
Right now there are two major mapping companies in North America. The GPS companies get their maps from either of those suppliers. Where you are, you have identified an area where the current Tele Atlas map is a few years behind reality. So a device based on NAVTEQ (the other major mapping company) might very well produce a better experience for you.
Other people in other areas might have the other problem... places where NAVTEQ is further behind.
So yes, you will have inaccuracies regardless of GPS model. However you might find that devices based on maps from the other supplier might be better in your area.

Of course, one must bear in mind the fact that we want GP devices to get us to UNFAMILIAR places. Therefore, in getting a mapset that works well in our home location may not be of any particular advantage to us!
  • @Infama: Yes, but people, new to GPS and pros alike, will usually test a new device with a few quick trips in familiar territory ...
  • To Tim,
So, what you're saying is that there is that it doesn't matter which GPS I may go with or stick with I'm may always have map inaccuracies?
    Cheers,
    Mike,
I saw your posts at the HP site, but was only viewing as a guest, so I could not respond.
Good to see you here. If people have answers here, you will normally see a quick response.
Tim gave you a fair response. If map accuracy in your own area is imperative, the best advice I can give you is to either get a Navteq supplied device (Garmin, Navigon, Intellinav or Magellan). Most of the rest are TeleAtlas supplied. One exception to the Navteq rule is TomTom, due to mapshare. Though they too use TeleAtlas, I suspect that the street name changes will have already been made by users and have shared via the Mapshare update. I have a TT920, so I will check out these street names when I get some time.
A good point to note is that your own area may not in the long run be the important factor for you. In going to other areas of Canada and the US, TeleAtlas may may indeed be better (they tend to have more addresses in the database, though there is no guarantee of quality from either map supplier w.r.t. specific addresses) and Navteq may be the wrong option then. Ideally, you may want to consider keeping the HP and getting a low end (and cheap) Navteq device like a Navigon 2100, Garmin 250 or a Magellan 3140. That way you cover all bases in terms of mapping.
  • Avelar -
I responded to your post in the HP forums - Tim says basically the same thing I said but with more information. After all he is to the GPS community what Gandar was to the Hobbits. :)
BTW thanks for the additional information on the 310. Do you have any idea where I can find a compatibility list for BT devices that will pair with the 310? I've scoured the HP forums, GPSPassion forums, and Google, but cannot find out if my Treo will connect to the HP.
I cannot contact HP because I don't own a HP device to make use of their support.
  • @infama
What about people coming to Ottawa-Carleton for the first time? And what better way to test a GPS device than in a city where you know the streets?
  • @Tim
You do make a very good point. I have enjoyed using the 310 over the weekend and have already planned my trip to PEI and NS with it. It is for my honeymoon, which is why I want to make sure everything works the way it should.
  • @Infama 2nd post
After hear and listening to what you folks have been saying, it's calmed me down a bit. I do intend on keeping the iPAQ, I've loved all my HP devices in the past.
I'd like to talk everyone who's help calm me down. I will definitely be coming back here for any of my questions or concerns. :)

    Congrats on your wedding Mike
The best way to test Mapset is by researching tests like Tim's where he randomly tested 1000 US addresses. It is a very interesting article with very interesting follow up comments by Navteq and Teleatlas people.
You can also check out the preponderance of online user experience. However, just checking out your local area will just tell you how good it is there. Remember that North American map data is HUMONGOUS! There is soooo much data, that even checking out one State or province is by no means enough to evaluate the continental quality rating.

I am ex-HP, so I should be disposed to liking this. However, I was before the Compaq merger, so the iPaq name does not sit well with me. Hehehehe.
One good news is that when TT does take over TA, the mapshare data will be used to clean up Ottawa for sure. I will check those addresses in the 920 and tell you what I come up with.

This is not actually true! As an example Birdstone Ave and Ember glow Ct in Stittsville show up on the iPaq, as does Mosgrave Ave in Nepean. These are just a few that I checked. Holly Acres road does not though. Not even on the new TT maps with Mapshare. I guess I will do this in my spare time!
I went back and checked the addresses on my TT 920 with 2 different map versions, ie ver 665 and version 710.1576. For the 665, there were 36 cases of the old name in the 665 map, with 30 cases of the new name and 16 overlaps where BOTH names show up. In the 710 map, there were 18 cases of the old names, 36 cases of the new addresses and 5 overlaps. No way to know if all these were TeleAtlas updates or Mapshare updates, but it does not matter for TT users.
I suggest that you go back and check on the status of the HP maps, as I think you will find more new address names that you originally assumed!
  • I have an iPAQ 310 and recently applied the latest map updates from hp.com support pages. During a recent trip to Quebec, I find that Quebec and Saskatchewan no longer exist!
Is there a trick to fix this. All of Canada is contained in one file, so there's not a file per province!
Other folks have gone to www.naviextras.com and repurchased new maps but I'm loathe to do so.
    Any ideas?
    -doug
  • You really only have 2 options if you didn't previously back up your old maps. Go naviextras and buy new ones or contact HP and tell them their last update is missing those maps and ask for a fix. I don't really hold out much hope with the 2nd option though.
  • HP will give you a fixed Canada.fbl if you are still in warranty. If not try anyways. If you really need it I can share.

Could you please send me Canada.fbl. I have the same problem. I appriciate it in advance.
