Part 2 of this guide is now available! Click here to read it. You can do so much with an old Nintendo Wii! I’ve already covered why the Wii is the best system out of which to build a retro game console. And I’ve put it to the test by building one myself. What is “homebrew”?

Homebrew refers to unofficial software including games, utilities, emulators and others.

Running homebrew on your Nintendo Wii is free using various exploits.

What can I do with homebrew?

Here’s a list of things you can do with it. While these aren’t all the things you can do with homebrew, it should give you a starting point for things you can do. Our guide will help you easily get started.

  • Patch game disc contents (allowing you to load game modifications) using Riivolution.
  • Install themes to your Wii Menu using MyMenuify.
  • Install a USB Loader like WiiFlow Lite or USB Loader GX to launch all your favorite titles from a USB storage device and more.
  • Back up your discs with CleanRip and installed games and titles with YABDM
  • Back up and restore your save files with SaveGame Manager GX
  • Download new homebrew apps with the Homebrew Browser
  • Restore discontinued online services, such as WiiConnect24 & Nintendo WFC services.
  • Backup and restore copies of your Wii system memory (NAND) using BootMii.
  • Protect your Wii from bricks using Priiloader and BootMii.

MyMenuify is an application used to install themes on your Wii's System Menu. It uses CSM files created by MyMenu or ThemeMii and also supports APP files. It works on all System Menu versions from all regions with no naming requirements. It will easily run through the Homebrew Channel.

You can find some themes here: Wii Menu Themes

Before you mess with themes

  • Before you install ANY themes make sure that you either have BootMii/boot2 or Preloader/Priiloader in order to recover from a brick. The developers of this software are not responsible for any damage done to your system, only YOU are!

Install

  • Place any csm in any folder of your choosing on your SD card, perhaps in a folder called 'Themes' (Without the Quotes) so they are easily found. SoftMii-style themes (000000XX.app) are also usable.
  • Download MyMenuifyGUI.zip
  • Extract to /apps/ on the root of your SD card.
  • Run the Homebrew Channel, and select MyMenuify.
  • Select your file with the D-Pad and press A to install.

Note

MyMenuify does not work with the Wii U’s vWii, Installing themes on the vWii can brick your Wii U.
